Cuba says it has discovered a new oil field off the northern coast of the Caribbean island, the official party newspaper "Granma" reported Saturday. The field, about 60 kilometers east of Havana, in Santa Cruz del Norte, has reserves of at least 100 million barrels, the paper said. It was the first new major oil discovery since 1999 for the island. Cuba currently covers about half of its oil needs from its own production. But Cuban oil has high amounts of sulfur, which can lead to disruptions in electricity plants. The new field reportedly has a higher quality of reserves.
