A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.1 struck Japan's northern island of Hokkaido on Tuesday, injuring three people, rupturing a water pipe, and shattering windows. The quake was centered nine kilometers (six miles) under the earth's surface on the northeastern coast of Hokkaido, about 1,000 kilometers (660 miles) northeast of Tokyo, the Meteorological Agency said.
