Tens of thousands of people marched through the streets of Rome Saturday to protest tougher immigration policies backed by Premier Silvio Berlusconi's government. The march drew immigrants, Italian supporters, union leaders and some leftist politicians. Berlusconi's government tightened Italy's immigration policy with a law approved in 2002. The legislation provides for the immediate expulsion of illegal immigrants and says that only immigrants with a job contract can get a residency permit. Italy, a country of about 57 million people, has about 1.2 million immigrants _ one of the lowest rates in the European Union. Many of the illegal immigrants who land on Italian shores every year move on to other European countries.
