The U.S. Embassy on Wednesday reopened its consular office in Bombay after shutting it for a day following a threat of a possible terrorist attack. The Bombay offices reopened after a thorough security review, an embassy statement said. Security around the American consulate was tightened Tuesday after the U.S. government warned that terrorists may be planning attacks on U.S. interests in India. The embassy in New Delhi, India's capital, and consular offices in the cities of Madras and Calcutta stayed open, however. The U.S. government advisory cautioned American citizens in India that residential areas, offices, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, schools, hostels and public places frequented by U.S. citizens and other foreigners could be targeted.
