APEC summit argues for greater trade and security

Leaders from 21 Asia-Pacific nations on Sunday in a "Declaration from Santiago" called for greater trade liberalization and security against terrorism at the end of the 12th Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Santiago.
Speaking in a short ceremony, Chile's President Ricardo Lagos said security in the region most be increased in order that terrorism does not have a deleterious effect on global trade.
Without providing details, Lagos went on to say that APEC is to push for a new drive for balanced results in the Doha round of trade liberalization within the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Russia and Vietnam can trust on the full support of APEC in their efforts to join the WTO, he added.
