U.S. consumer prices rose 0.6 percent in October, which was the sharpest rise in five months, the Commerce Department reported Wednesday. Higher prices for gasoline, fruits, and vegetables were responsible for much of the increase, the department said. In September, consumer prices rose by a modest 0.2 percent. Excluding food and energy prices, inflation rose by only 0.2 percent in October, the department said. This category rose 0.3 percent in September.
