Pakistani troops backed by helicopter gunships clashed with suspected militants, killing six fighters and losing two of their soldiers Tuesday in a tribal region where hundreds of foreign fighters are believed to be hiding, an army spokesman said. Several other soldiers were wounded in the offensive that began late Monday northeast of Wana, the main town in the South Waziristan region bordering Afghanistan, Maj. Gen. Shaukat Sultan told The Associated Press from Rawalpindi, a city where the army is headquartered. The clashes began after the militants attacked security forces, Sultan said.
