U.S. planes bombed targets just north of Iraq's restive city of Samarra on Monday, killing one person and wounding four, police and hospital officials said. The air strike came after insurgents mounted a string of suicide bombings and attacks on police stations that killed 34 people and wounded 49 people in Samarra on Saturday. The mayor of Samarra, Taha al-Hindera, told reporters the air strike hit the Jubairiya area outside the Sunni Muslim city, 100 km (62 miles) north of Baghdad. A U.S. military spokesman said he had no immediate information on any air strike in that area. The Associated Press quoted witnesses as saying U.S. forces were fighting gunbattles with insurgents inside Samarra, but details were sketchy.
