In Falluja, residents said there was heavy fighting on the eastern and northern outskirts of the city and, for the first time, on the western edge fronting the Euphrates river after intense overnight air strikes and artillery shelling. The U.S. military says 1,000 to 6,000 fighters, including some Zarqawi loyalists are holed up in Falluja.
