Fashir, Sudan, Oct 30, SPA-- Renewed fighting - the most fierce since a fragile ceasefire was signed - has broken out in the Darfur region of Sudan between rebels and government-backed militiamen, a senior African Union officer said, as Rwanda sent an additional 60 troops there Saturday. Colonel Anthony Amedel, head of the A.U. forces overseeing the truce in Darfur, said the latest fighting broke out when fighters with the rebel Sudan Liberation Army (SLA) abducted 10 civilians among the nomadic Arab tribesmen in the area of Zalengi in southern Darfur for unknown reasons. The attack reported by A.U. monitors was the latest in the series of ceasefire violations by all parties in the conflict, and Amedel said it will hamper the ongoing African efforts to restore calm to the region. An A.U. helicopter did not land in the area because of the heavy fighting, which is still raging on, Amedel told journalists in al- Fashir. There was no immediate news of casualties.
