Vice President Dick Cheney decided that on Sunday night he will make a campaign detour to visit Hawaii, a state only two Republicans have won in a presidential race. The polls have shown an even distribution between President George W. Bush and Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry supporters in Hawaii. The Bush-Cheney campaign says Hawaii is within its reach, and that its four electoral votes could be important to balance any miscalculations elsewhere. Governor Linda Lingle, Hawaii's first Republican governor in four decades, requested that a Republican representative visit Hawaii following the last presidential debate. Hawaii Democratic Senator Daniel Inouye fought back in Kerry's favor, citing his anger over the disproportionately high deployment of the Hawaii National Guard, high gasoline prices, and Bush's gun legislation. To represent the Kerry-Edwards campaign, Democrat Al Gore and Kerry's daughter Alexandra will visit Hawaii on Friday.
