France has broken its record for new daily coronavirus infections, with 16,972 cases recorded in 24 hours, dpa cited authorities as saying today. The new record came just over a week after France's previous highest number of cases in a single day was registered - 16,096 on September 24. So far, France has seen around 32,000 deaths from coronavirus since the pandemic began. Mask-wearing is compulsory even outdoors in many French cities. In the harbour city of Marseilles, bars and restaurants are completely closed. In Paris, there is a looming threat of closing such establishments due to infection numbers.
