The Security Council voted unanimously last night in favor of extending the United Nation's mandate in Western Sahara to the end of April, while also calling on the U.N. Secretary-General to provide a report within three months on the current situation in the country. The council will decide after the report in January 2005 whether to reduce the peacekeeping troops in the area or not. Both parties, the Polisario and Morocco, are currently at a political standstill. The Polisario has been working towards self-determination, while Morocco has rejected Western Saharan autonomy.
