U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell on Monday urged Chinese leaders to pursue dialogue with Taiwan but told them American weapons sales to the self-ruled island would continue despite Beijing's objections. Powell acknowledged that Beijing distrusts the intentions of Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian. Powell met with Chinese President Hu Jintao and other leaders and said he encouraged them to "do everything they could to get into cross-straits dialogue in a more systemic and deliberate way." However, he said at a news conference, "The response that I received from the Chinese leadership today was that they are still concerned about President Chen Shui-bian's actions."
