At least 32 children have died from a mysterious illness in northern India in the last two days, New Delhi Television reported Saturday. Doctors said more than 100 children in four districts of the state of Uttar Pradesh have been hospitalised after complaints of severe headaches, fever and vomiting. The symptoms were similar to those of encephalitis, meningitis and cholera, they said, but were unable to identify the illness. "The disease is a result of inflammation of the brain membranes and patients generally vomit blood," said government health director SK Arora, adding: "It appears to be prevalent among those residing in unhygienic conditions."
