One person was killed and at least 60 were injured when several strong earthquakes hit Japan's northwestern Niigata prefecture Saturday evening, local media reported. One man in his 30s in the city of Ojiya in Niigata died after he was buried under a collapsed house, according to NHK news. Many people in Niigata, about 350 kilometers northwest of Tokyo, were injured after being hit by flying objects during the strong quakes. Several houses in the city of Ojiya collapsed. A bullet train from Tokyo to Niigata derailed in the city of Sanjyo in Niigata, but there were no injuries, NHK said. In the city of Kashiwazaki and other cities in Niigata, households lost electricity, NHK said. An initial quake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale occurred at 0856 GMT, followed by four more including one registering 6.3. All were felt in many northern and eastern prefectures including Tokyo. Many aftershock quakes occurred in Niigata, according to the Meteorological Agency.
