Authorities in Mauritania released 26 soldiers and paramilitary police who had been arrested in connection with recent coup attempts the government claims to have foiled, state radio said Wednesday. The 26 were freed late Tuesday and reintegrated into their units, the radio said. No reason was given for their release. The government of President Maaoya Sid'Ahmed Ould Taya launched a crackdown on opponents in the wake of two foiled two coup attempts in August and September.
