The death toll from a typhoon that swiped Japan's Pacific coast rose to five on Sunday, as workers resumed the search for four people who had gone missing during the heavy rains and flooding. Ma-on, the record eighth typhoon to strike Japan this year, was the most powerful storm to reach the eastern coastline in a decade. It brought sustained winds of 162 kilometers (100 miles) per hour and a sudden downpour that turned streets into rivers and touched off landslides. By late Saturday, the storm had turned eastward into the Pacific Ocean, where it slowed and weakened.
