The West African nations of Gambia and Nigeria on Monday recorded their first Covid-19 deaths, while the number of all coronavirus cases surpassed 1,000 on the African continent, dpa reported. In Gambia, the victim was a 70-year-old Bangladeshi man who travelled to Gambia from Senegal on March 13, Gambia Health Minister Amadou Samateh said on national television. Samateh also reported an additional case of Covid-19, the disease caused by the virus, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the country to two. In Africa's most populous nation Nigeria, the first person to die due to coronavirus is a 67-year-old man who recently returned from Britain, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control said. Nigeria reported 36 confirmed cases so far.
