Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero has pledged to "finish with illegal immigration" after revealing that Spain had 800,000 illegals, press reports said Thursday.
The figure was the first official estimate by the Socialist government, which assumed office in April. Legal immigrants number about 1.7 million in the country of 41 million.
Speaking in parliament on Wednesday, Zapatero accused the former conservative government of allowing the number of illegals to soar.
He pledged to legalize the situation for many of them, and said cooperation was improving with neighbouring Morocco to prevent African illegals from crossing over to Spain. --SP 1342 Local Time 1042 GMT
