Egyptian authorities on Wednesday executed six men convicted of killing 23 members of a rival family in a revenge massacre in the south of the country in August 2002, prison sources said. The execution by hanging took place amid tight security in Qena prison, outside their home province of Sohag for fear that their relatives would gather outside the prison. Qena is on the Nile about 470 km (290 miles) south of Cairo. Members of the Abdel Rahim family carried out the massacre in the village of Beit Allam after member of the Hunayshat killed a leading member of the Abdel Halim clan. Seven other people were sentenced to hard labour for life or 15 years for their part in the killings.
