The Project of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd bin Abdulaziz for the expansion of the Holy Harram (Grand Mosque) in Makkah and the Prophet's Mosque in Al-Madinah is the greatest evidence of the Kingdom's noble deeds in the service of Islam and Muslims. King Fahd has accorded this project the Kingdom's top priority and extended his personal care to its targeted goals. In order to carry out the project of the expansion of the Two Holy Mosques, the government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, under a directive of King Fahd, has spent over SR. 70 billion in the past few years only. With the implementation of the expansion program, the area of the mosque now totals 356,000 square meters which was only 152,000 square meters in the past. The mosque can receive now 770,000 worshipers as compared to 340,000 worshippers in the past. The project also includes the surrounding area of the mosque, covering more than 40,000 square meters, which can accommodate more than 65,000 worshipers. The Prophet's Mosque in Al-Madinah was expanded to a total area of 165,000 square meters to receive more than 270,000 worshipers. The Mosque area was also expanded to 235,000 square meters to receive 430,000 worshipers.
