In a rare revelation by state media, one of Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe's most senior lieutenants was blamed Sunday for leading a rampage against opponents within the ruling ZANU(PF) party. The government-controlled Sunday Mail published comprehensive details of a police report describing how Didymus Mutasa, the minister of anti-corruption and a veteran of Mugabe's politburo, led a mob of 25 thugs on a two-day rampage last month against a rival. James Kaunye, a senior member of Mugabe's notorious war veterans militia, is seeking to become the ZANU(PF) candidate for Mutasa's seat in parliamentary elections to be held next year. The report listed 14 incidents in which Mutasa's gang assaulted 70 people, including Kaunye who was left for dead, as they rampaged through the district. Among the catalogue of injuries were two war veterans supporters who had their legs broken, one who was stabbed in buttocks with a screwdriver and a woman beaten on the back with a shovel. --More 2223 Local Time 1923 GMT
