Malaysia's former deputy leader Anwar Ibrahim arrived in Germany Sunday for back surgery at a Munich clinic. A spokeswoman at the Alpha clinic in the southern city confirmed Anwar's arrival but would give no details of the treatment planned. Malaysian reports, quoting Anwar, said surgery was set for Monday. He is expected to take three weeks to a month to recover. Anwar was released from jail Thursday after Malaysia's highest court acquitted him of a sodomy conviction. He had served six years. Thousands of supporters were at Kuala Lumpur airport Saturday night to give Anwar a send-off as he left on a Malaysian Airlines commercial flight. He was accompanied by his wife, Wan Azizah, neurosurgeon Halili Rahmat, and some members of his family. Anwar had told Malaysian media he would undergo minimally invasive surgery on his back at the private Munich clinic on Monday.
