Mexico has not detected any terror activity aimed against the United States despite reports that al Qaeda may be operating in Mexico, the president's office said on Thursday. U.S. media have said al Qaeda operatives may be trying to sneak into the United States across the 2,000-mile (3,200-km) border with Mexico. And the Mexican attorney-general's office said on Wednesday federal police arrested a people smuggler who sneaked Iraqi and Iranian illegal immigrants into California. But a presidential spokesman said Mexican intelligence had found no evidence of anti-U.S.terror groups operating in Mexico. "There is no sign that there are terorists in Mexico who have tried to cross the border with the United States," the spokesman said. Mexico has tightened security on the border since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in the United States. Thousands of illegal immigrants enter the United States through the Mexican border every day, often with the help of people smugglers. --SP 2313 Local Time 2013 GMT
