A hydroelectric power plant has shut down on Canada's Atlantic Coast after a young humpback whale got trapped in an underwater gate. Officials at the powerplant turned off the turbines to make sure the whale won't be injured and can swim back into the bay, Margaret Murphy, a spokeswoman for the plant, said Wednesday. The whale did not seem to make any attempts to break free by late Tuesday, Carl Myers with Canada's Fisheries Department said. The whale swam through a nine-metre gate on Monday. The plant is located north of the Gulf of Maine on the west coast of Novia Scotia near the small town of Annapolis Royal. It was believed that the whale was chasing a school of herring. Boaters have been asked to stay away from the area because they could keep the whale from swimming back out into the bay.
