The first international convention on the rights of people with disabilities will start on Monday, August 23 at U.N. headquarters. Organizers are expected to create a legally binding framework for promoting the rights of the 600 million disabled. The U.N. General Assembly committee will finalize the "International Convention on Protection and Promotion of the Rights and Dignity of Persons with Disabilities," which includes finalizing the preamble and structure of the document. The committee will review provisions that were drafted earlier this year. The event will involve member states and non-governmental organizations that have been invited to speak on behalf of disabled people. The convention will run until September 3.
