Typhoon Megi hit South Korea's southern provinces with strong winds and heavy rains, killing two people, officials said Thursday. Three people are missing in the typhoon that forced more than 2,400 people to be evacuated in southwestern towns due to flooding. Police believe a 65-year-old woman found dead Thursday was trying to cross a stream in her village in Sunchang, 364 kilometers south of Seoul in south Jeolla province, reported the National Disaster Prevention and Countermeasures Headquarters said. The system has weakened to a tropical storm early Thursday, government anti-disaster officials said. Strong rains, up to 100 millimeters in some areas in a six-hour span, caused flooding and landslides. Typhoon Megi, which means fish in Korean, tore through Japan on Wednesday, killing at least four people dead with two still missing.
