Turkish leaders on Tuesday appointed the first civilian to oversee the country's influential security council. The appointment of Mehmet Yigit Alpogan as secretary-general of Turkey's powerful National Security Council was also in line with reforms necessary for joining the European Union. The appointment of Alpogan, who has served as Turkey's ambassador to Greece, went into effect Tuesday after it was published in Turkey's Official Gazette.
