Eight premature infants died of bacterial infections blamed on poor hygiene in the hospital where they were born, local media reported Sunday, citing authorities. The incubators where the infants were kept and the entire neonatal ward had been inadequately sanitized in the hospital in the city of Santa Cruz. Bolivian health officials have begun an investigation into the deaths and the hospital conditions. Many of Bolivia's hospitals are in poor condition and often lack basic supplies including bandages and disinfectants.
