Asian stock markets steadied on Tuesday, AP reported. Benchmarks in Shanghai and Sydney rose. Hong Kong gave up early gains and Tokyo declined. The Shanghai Composite Index gained 0.2% to 2,993.35, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 0.1% to 29,172.09. Sydney's S&P-ASX 200 picked up 1% to 6,297.30 and India's Sensex gained 0.1% to 38,647.05. Markets in New Zealand, Jakarta and Singapore rose, while Bangkok was lower. Tokyo's Nikkei 225 lost 1.5% to 21,917.71 and Seoul's Kospi slid 1% to 2,175.07. Benchmark U.S. crude gained 18 cents to $62.43 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract gained 31 cents on Monday to close at $62.25. Brent crude, used to price international oils, added 4 cents to $71.28 per barrel in London. It rose 39 cents the previous session to $71.24. The dollar edged down to 110.64 yen from Monday's 110.72 yen. The euro advanced to $1.1212 from $1.1201.
