Belgian cyclist Michael Goolaerts was taken to a hospital in Lille after a fall during the Paris-Roubaix race on Sunday and is in a serious condition, according to the medical department of race organizers ASO. Goolaerts, who rides for the second-tier Veranda's Willems-Crelan, crashed some 150 kilometres before the finish in one of the race's cobblestone sections, according to dpa. Reports said the 23-year-old suffered a cardiac arrest. Television footage showed him lying on the ground and it appeared that he was receiving CPR from a medical team. His team said only that he was taken to hospital and they later tweeted: "We kindly ask to refrain from speculation as we wait for an update on his situation. Our thoughts are with his family and friends now." It remained unclear why Goolaerts fell but several riders, including four-time time-trial world champion Tony Martin of Germany, went down in the race, which was won by world champion Peter Sagan of Slovakia.
