British foreign secretary Boris Johnson today welcomed the appointment Martin Griffiths, a Briton, as new UN special envoy for Yemen replacing Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed. In a statement issued by the foreign office, Johnson said the new UN envoy has a long experience as UN expert in the region, and is an expert in international mediation affairs and dispute settlement, thanking outgoing UN special envoy for Yemen Ould Cheikh for his dedication in his role as special envoy to Yemen since April 2015 and for the efforts he exerted to facilitate the peace process in Yemen. He concluded that the United Kingdom believes that peace, stability and security in Yemen could not be brought about without a comprehensive political settlement.
