Around 130,000 hectares of forest and grasslands in Chile have been struck by wildfires, with the country's National Forest Corporation (CONAF) reporting 46 active fires as of Monday. Fires are raging in central and southern Chile, including the port city Valparaiso and the capital Santiago, as well as the regions of O'Higgins, Maule, Biobio, La Araucania and Los Lagos. Chilean President Michelle Bachelet has cancelled her Tuesday trip to the Dominican Republic for a Latin America summit, as well as an onward journey to Haiti due to the emergency. "We are encountering the greatest forest disaster of our history, but we will overcome this emergency," Bachelet wrote on Twitter. Emergency services have been battling the flames for days, bringing hundreds of fires under control.
