Taliban fighters attacked the capital of the northern Afghan province of Kunduz early Monday, local television reported, according to dpa. They advanced into the city, with heavy ground fighting taking place near the university, according to Tolo TV. Police spokesman Mahfozullah Akbari said, "the Taliban started attacking Kunduz city at 2 am, coming from four directions. They were in the Zakhil area, Imam Saheb port and in the 3rd district." Akbari said that Afghan security and air forces have been able to push the Taliban back in some areas.
