Indonesia executed an unspecified number of convicted drug traffickers on Friday, according to TV reports, in the third such group executions since President Joko Widodo took office in October 2014. The convicts were shot by firing squad at the Nusa Kambangan penal island shortly after midnight amid pouring rain, dpa reported. It was unclear how many were executed, TV One and Metro TV reported, citing an unnamed source. The attorney general's office said late Wednesday that 14 convicts would be executed "soon." Widodo refused appeals for clemency from relatives of the convicts and ignored calls for a halt to the executions from rights groups and the United Nations. Last year, Indonesia executed 14 death row convicts in a move that drew criticism from the UN and the European Union.
