The lower house of the Polish parliament gave its approval Friday to a controversial set of measures that expand police surveillance powers. Lawmakers in the lower chamber, the Sejm, voted 249 to 173 in favour of the legislation. It now moves to the Senate, where it is expected to win easy approval in the coming days, dpa reported. The measures give security forces the ability to obtain telephone and internet metadata without first receiving a court order. Police would also be able to hold individuals for up to two weeks without a warrant for their arrest.
