Sunderland gave their Premier League survival hopes a huge boost as they upset Manchester United 2-1 on Saturday to pile the pressure on United manager Louis van Gaal, dpa reported. Lamine Kone headed the winner, off the body of goalkeeper David De Gea, eight minutes from time to lift Sunderland to third-bottom, one point behind fourth-bottom Newcastle. Southampton climbed to sixth after a 1-0 win at Swansea City while West Ham United are seventh after recovering from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at Norwich City, who remain in the bottom three. Wahbi Khazri put Sunderland ahead after three minutes when his free-kick crept into the far corner. Anthony Martial equalized six minutes before half-time after a good shot from Juan Mata was deflected into his path. But Sunderland defended superbly and continued to attack and Kone won it for them to clinch victory and move them to within one point of Newcastle, who were due to play champions Chelsea in the day's late match.
