One of the Philippines' most active volcanoes spewed ash into the air on Sunday, more than one month since authorities raised the alert level over it, dpa reported. The grey plume reached a height of at least 1,000 metres from the crater of Mount Kanlaon in Negros Oriental province, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said. Residents around the volcano heard rumbling sounds during the ash eruption, but no injuries were reported, the institute said. The alert level at the 2,435-metre volcano about 520 kilometres south of Manila was raised from zero to one, which means "it has entered a period of unrest," in November following a similar ash explosion. Phivolcs reminded the public to stay outside a 4-kilometre radius danger zone "due to further possibilities of sudden and hazardous steam-driven, or phreatic, eruptions." It also advised aviation authorities to warn pilots against flying near the volcano's summit due to emissions.
