Rescue teams were using specially trained dogs to scour mountains on an archipelago in northern Norway Sunday, a government official said, one day after an avalanche ripped houses from where they stood, leaving one dead, dpa reported. "We've been hit with a huge tragedy," Sysselmann Kjerstin Askholt, government official for the Svalbard archipelago, said at a press conference on Sunday. Experts were looking for signs of further danger, Askholt said, adding that the area had not yet been confirmed safe. Around 170 people have been evacuated from the Longyearbyen arctic settlement. One man died and at least 10 people were injured when the avalanche unexpectedly hit on Saturday morning. Among among them were two children, who are reportedly still receiving treatment in hospital.
