Authorities in southern Mexico have freed a mayor who was detained more than a month ago in the company of an alleged leader of a drug gang linked to the disappearance of 43 students, according to AP. Ulises Ramirez told The Associated Press on Sunday that he was freed without charges on Thursday. Federal agents detained him in late October in Guerrero state along with Adan Zenen Casarrubias, who authorities believe was a leader of the Guerreros Unidos gang. Ramirez is the mayor of Cocula, the town where authorities believe the missing students were killed and incinerated. He had recently taken office and was not mayor when the students were purportedly killed in September 2014. Local police allegedly detained the students in the nearby city of Iguala and delivered them to gang gunmen.
