The University of Chicago cancelled all classes and activities Monday after the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) passed on an online threat of gun violence on the campus quad at 10 a.m. local time. The decision to close, which the FBI said the university made, affected the more than 30,000 students, faculty, and staff who work on the Hyde Park campus south of downtown Chicago, Illinois. Students who live on the campus were advised to stay indoors. The only facility that remained open was the medical center, which was treating patients but had added security.
