Rescue teams from Spain and Turkey were looking for survivors after boats carrying migrants capsized in two separate incidents in waters near the Canary Islands and off Turkey, the Red Cross and a Turkish news agency reported Wednesday. More than 20 people are missing in the Atlantic after a boat filled with migrants sank south of the Canary Islands, the Red Cross reported. Around 22 of the migrants were rescued by the Spanish Coastguard and brought to safety in the port at Arguineguin on the southern coast of Gran Canaria, dpa reported. An estimated 45 refugees from Africa were on board the boat, the Red Cross said, citing the survivors. The cause of the sinking is as of yet unknown. Rescue workers were recovering the missing, with so far one person pulled dead from the water. In a separate incident, 10 migrants were missing in waters off the south-west coast of Turkey, Turkish news agency Anadolu said on Wednesday. Five Syrians were rescued from the Aegean Sea after the boat, which was headed for the Greek island of Cos, came into difficulty. They have been returned to Turkey, according to the report. Europe is contending with the largest flow of migrants since World War II, with more than 830,000 people arriving by sea this year according to the International Organization for Migration.
