AlHijjah 19, 1436, October 03, 2015, SPA -- Nobel-winning author Mario Vargas Llosa says while there's more freedom of the press in Latin America today, drug cartels pose a serious threat to journalists, according to AP. The Nobel laureate from Peru spoke on a wide range of issues Saturday before the Inter American Press Association meeting in Charleston. He said press freedom is greater under the democracies that replaced the dictatorships that once held sway in the region. However, he added that drug-trafficking organizations, typically hostile to investigative reporters, pose a very serious threat to press freedom. Vargas Llosa also said social media and other new technologies mean progress for freedom of expression. The press group is meeting through Monday.
