AlQa'dah 7, 1436, Aug 22, 2015, SPA -- A powerful typhoon toppled electricity transmission lines and trees as it triggered landslides and floods that left at least nine people dead in the northern Philippines, dpa quoted officials as saying Saturday. Large portions of the northern mountain provinces remained without power, and several roads and bridges were impassable, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council. Thirteen domestic flights were cancelled Saturday due to bad weather, while classes had been suspended in many parts of the capital, which have also experienced heavy rain, the agency added. Workers wer trying to clear roads and restore power to the northern provinces, disaster council chief Alexander Pama said. Seven people were killed in the mountainous Benguet province, nearly 200 kilometres north of Manila, due to several landslides, according to Governor Nestor Fongwan. Typhoon Goni weakened slightly Saturday, according to the weather bureau.
