The White House said Monday it has told the Mexican government that the United States wants to see escaped drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman recaptured to face justice, and Washington has pledged assistance to Mexico in the effort. Mexico will have the prime responsibility to recapture Guzman, spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters, but he noted that the United States would support the Mexican effort if requested to. According to Earnest, U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch spoke with her Mexican counterpart Sunday, the day after Guzman escaped from a maximum-security prison outside Mexico City, sparking a massive manhunt. Guzman escaped Saturday by dropping down a shaft from his prison cell's shower area and disappearing into a sophisticated 1.6-kilometer tunnel. He is considered one of the world's richest and most powerful drug-cartel leaders. He was recaptured last year, 13 years after another prison escape. He faces drug-trafficking and other charges in both Mexico and the United States.
