A poll published Saturday by German tabloid Bild shows that 89 per cent of its readers are against giving any further financial aid to Greece, according to dpa. The newspaper said 200,000 Germans took part in what it termed its Bild Referendum on its website Friday. People could also vote by email or fax. In an accompanying editorial, Germany's most popular newspaper said: "The result of the Bild Referendum is an unambiguous message to politicians: German citizens do not want to support deadbeat Greece with more billions." The article said the result was also a plea to the Greeks: "You are a proud people. But a proud people must not live off others. It must summon up its own strength. And: It must save, be ready for reforms." Other EU countries had proved it was possible to gain new growth and prosperity through reforms, it said. "Greece must also demonstrate this fortitude." Greeks go to the polls on Sunday in a referendum on the latest bailout package from its international creditors. Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and his leftist SYRIZA party have urged them to reject the deal. Bild has a daily readership of some 2.5 million and is known for its often sensationalist reporting and conservative viewpoint.
