A plan to relocate 40,000 asylum seekers from Italy and Greece to other European Union countries was revealed Friday after marathon talks in Brussels, UPI reported. Involvement in the plan by the 28 members of the economic bloc is voluntary, with no quotas involved; Hungary, which Tuesday indefinitely suspended an existing EU rule requiring migrants to be processed in the country in which they arrive, and Bulgaria were omitted from the new plan. Both countries have requested a reduction in the burden of settling refugees. The negotiations demonstrated the contentious nature of European countries agreeing to take in some of those fleeing poverty and violence in North Africa and the Middle East.
