Hosts Chile beat Ecuador 2-0 Thursday in Santiago, in the opening game of Copa America. Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal converted the opener from the penalty spot in the 66th minute. Ecuador had their chances and Enner Valencia even hit the woodwork late in the second half, but Eduardo Vargas made things 2-0 in the 83rd minute in Santiago's National Stadium off a pass from Arsenal's Alexis Sanchez. Chilean midfielder Matias Fernandez was sent off in injury time. The Copa America is set to continue Friday with Mexico facing Bolivia, while Saturday will feature higher-profile matches: Uruguay-Jamaica and Argentina-Paraguay. Brazil will be making their tournament debut on Sunday against Peru, dpa reported.
