Greece does not have the money to make a repayment to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) by June, the country's interior minister said Sunday, according to dpa. "I want to be clear: This money will not be given and is not there to be given," Interior Minister Nikos Voutsis told Mega TV. Voutsis is from Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras' left-wing Syriza party. It was expected that Greece would be unable to make a 300-million-euro payment to the IMF on June 5 without a cash injection. It is supposed to make a total of 1.5 billion euros in payments to the fund in June alone. On Friday, a government spokesman said that Athens hoped to reach a bailout deal with its creditors in the next 10 days. Greece is believed to be close to going bankrupt after failing for months to access 7.2 billion euros (8 billion dollars) left in its international bailout. Its creditors insist that it must agree to economic reforms before they will release the funds. But Tsipras has struggled to find common ground with them since taking office in January on a promise to end bailout-associated austerity. The European part of Greece's bailout is also due to expire at the end of next month. If an agreement with the creditors is not found before then, Athens may lose the remaining aid altogether.
